THE TURNING POINT
Growing up, I had always been the biggest kid in the class but I started to pick up more weight when I started working a 9-5 after college and stopped playing soccer. I fluctuated, losing and gaining 20-40 pounds for 20 years. My heaviest weight was 207 pounds.
Basically, after college I had a different level of freedom and more money since I was a working-class woman fresh out of college. I was eating out all the time, hanging out late, I wasn’t exercising like I was when I played soccer. The discipline was not there anymore.
Flash forward to February 2016. I had joined a boot camp and I hated everything about it. The methods, the diet, EVERYTHING. At that point, I decided that I needed help to get and stay healthy.
I was contemplating finding a psychologist that centered on food issues but I was referred to Body Refined by a client who spoke of the focus on the whole lifestyle change and not just food or exercise.
Until now, I had only focused on changing diet and exercise, not my lifestyle.
The weight I lost in the past happened by changing exercise and nutrition, but mostly at an extreme level. I must admit that I tried other extreme measures as well: B12 shots, diet medications, HCG. Restrictive diets and not focusing on lifestyle but just changing the scale.
I never felt that I could keep up those regimens for the rest of my life. Quite honestly, I didn’t want to.
This time, I literally transformed my lifestyle. Everything I do is driven by a schedule. A schedule of sleep, eating, moving, exercise. I schedule my life like I schedule all my meetings for my job. And it works!
I feel much better now. I don’t feel full and bloated after eating because I eat much cleaner. I sleep much better and my skin is clearer. I do feel like I can focus on tasks at hand for a little bit longer than I did before.
I struggled a lot in the beginning and I still do. The difference is now I can decide not to give in, most the time, where as before, I would give in more often than less. There are still struggles when I am at work or social functions because I don’t partake in the social norms of drinking and eating whatever is available.
I am so much more confident in being able to say NO and to eat clean. Sometimes, people are more uncomfortable than I am, if I don’t eat and drink what everyone else has in their hand.
WHY BODY REFINED
My friend who referred me to Kurt, was very clear in saying that Kurt was influencing other parts in her life and that it was helpful. I knew that I needed more comprehensive help to change the course of my life and not just a new diet or a new workout plan.
Working with Kurt wasn’t an easy transition because the entire focus is a comprehensive change and that is not the approach of any help I had in the past. I felt that my life was being invaded but I eventually figured I need to deal with it and participate. And the payoff has been worth it!!
Honestly, I wouldn’t refer just anyone to Kurt. If someone is looking for a quick fix or a just to lose weight, this may not be the place. I mention who helps me when people ask me what I have done, but I also let them know that they must be willing to let go of all they thought they knew about improving their health and to try something different.
I would advise them to change more than their workout and nutrition. A more comprehensive change will lead to sustained health.
I would also say don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t go at it alone. Having a support system has given me additional confidence that I can stay on course and get the help if I am teetering on the edge of regressing.
